Speech Pathology in dystonia is twofold. The person with spasmodic dysphonia (voice dystonia) may be helped with breathing exercises and tips on voice projection while those with swallowing difficulties either due to their dystonia or as a side effect of treatment will require swallowing assessment and management strategies such as the use of thickened fluids, pureed food and correct positioning when eating. In orofacial dystonia the speech pathologist can suggest tips to assist communication. Speech pathology is often linked in with other treatments such as botulinum toxin.
